Fugitive Books explores the story behind the phenomenal pioneering success of the UNSW book fair, which reigned for over forty years as Sydneys biggest and best-organised second-hand book sale.

The UNSW book fair was founded by the U Committee, a womens voluntary group fundraising for the university, in 1968 during a moment of great optimism for bookselling and publishing, and ran until 2012, a time of uncertainty over the future of books and libraries. In its heyday this book fair was a magnet for book acquirers of every description from near and afar, and its opening days featured on the evening TV news.
Fugitive Books looks at the unexpected context and concerns that gave rise to the book fairs founding and inspired the women who were its founders and whose
unflagging voluntary work kept it running for so long. Books and their acquirers are at the heart of this story, the cycles of acquisition and dispersal. So, too, is the extraordinary dedication of the U Committee and the enduring legacy of its workaround UNSWs campus, in a tale encompassing motifs of internationalism, of aspiration and hope, of sociability and service.
