Former Papua New Guinea (PNG) parliamentarian (1968–1977) Sir John Middleton, foundation director of Ramu Sugar, was
knighted for his services to PNG in 2003. He and his family have owned land on the island of Karkar, part of PNG’s Madang
Province, since the mid-1920s.
The Kullis Estate copra and cocoa plantations, damaged during World War II, were rebuilt by John and his father Max after the war,
and today John continues to manage them with his two sons. They are now totally powered by bio-fuel extracted from the
coconut, while cocoa remains the main trade item.
This fascinating record of PNG life is based on Sir John’s personal recollections and contributions from his family and friends,
providing a colourful picture of life on Karkar Island. Renowned PNG specialist James Sinclair (author of The Middle Kingdom)
contributes a section with historical background to the Middletons’ Karkar plantations, including Max’s early life and wartime escapades.
