‘These beautiful miniatures should bring a lot of pleasure to any pianist in the Grade 4 to 7 range. \”Poem for Saigon\” is a compact brooding masterpiece that is not very far below the calibre of the Chopin Preludes. Three of the pieces (\”Angel\”, \”First Love\” and \”Etude Romantique\”) are lean of texture, consisting of just single notes in each hand, and provide RH phrases that soar in a very expressively romantic way. The LH figurations have subtle variegations; for example in \”Angel\” the phrases begin with a simple stretched-Alberti-type figure in the LH, but this then morphs in a lovely way into an arpeggiated figure as the phrases die. In \”First Love\” the way the second phrase fades away and transitions into the third phrase is pure genius. In all three of these pieces the ease of mastering the notes allows the player to focus on injecting soul and passion into the phrases, savouring the harmonic shifts, and exploring the colour and dynamic possibilities the pieces demand. All three of these pieces could well be titled \”Etudes Romantiques\”, as they have real romantic expressiveness at their heart. \”Destiny\”, with its fiery virtuosity, would be more suited to a Grade 7 player. Both here and in \”Forever\” there are some fascinating rhythmic ambiguities to savour. This is a very fine set of pieces that works well in the concert hall.’ Antony Peebles, British concert pianist
