With multiple offices in Australia and Denmark, Terroir has both a global perspective on the role of architecture in the contemporary city, and an intense commitment to the local site conditions of each new project. The practice was established in 1999, by three former univer- sity colleagues based in Tasmania. All three were teenagers during the highly political Tasmanian wilderness and dam disputes of the early 1980s. As a result, the practice has been forged from a common interest in how communities work with complex spatial and economic problems. Many of Terroirs larger projects have a significant impacton the public domain, which has led to the development of a third space strategy. These spaces are often not in the brief, and at times actually resist the functional logic of a projectin the interests of greater urban openness, engagement and generosity.Third Space is the first in a series of publications, each in- tended to start with a conceptual framework, around which a variety of projects, both recent and past, move in and out of focus. It includes an essay by John Hong, professor at Seoul National University and director of the Seoul-based practice Project: Architecture. It also includes an essay by philosopher and architectural writer, Andrew Benjamin.
